A Day of Many Wargames

One of us recently moved to a new house. What better way to celebrate than to spend a day there hanging out, talking, drink a few beers and playing some wargames?

We were having a great day of relaxed wargaming and really couldn't be bothered to take notes and  pictures for extensive AARs. We did take some pictures however and also will try to give a short account each game.

As there were four of us and we had more than one gaming board we played several games during the day. Two WW2 games of clashing patrols. For this we tried a modified version of Games Workshop's Necromunda rules that gave quick and fun games. We also played some Song of Drums and Shakos. Last but not least we played a game of Warhammer.

WW2 patrol #1

A clash of a Soviet and a German patrol during the last days of the Reich in 1945. The two patrols advanced with the germans taking up positions in the row of buildings by the road. As the Soviet attacked on a flank a close range fire fight broke loose where the Soviet came out on top, later forcing the Germans to withdraw.

The first table, with the Germans entering from the left and the Soviets from the right.
The Soviet approach the hamlet.
The Germans take up positions by the main building.
The Soviet advance cautiously...
...as the Germans lurks by the road.
"Peek-a-boo." This will be messy.
"Urrah!" The Soviets launch their attack.

WW2 patrol #2

A Soviet patrol run into some German fallshirmsjäger in the fall of 1944. The soviet rushed forward to take up position in the main building. It turned into a death trap however as the Germans poured submachingun fire through the windows. The Soviet never really recovered from that blow and eventually had to withdraw.

The Fallshirmsjäger patrol.
The Russians advance.
The Russians rush forward to take up position in the main building...
...but it turns into a death trap as the Germans fire through the windows.
Face off.
End game approaches.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle

A ghostly undead army took on a witch elf host. Despite being the larger force the flurry of attacks from the witch elves made short work of the undead. It might have contributed that the dark elf general is reigning champion, world champion really, having won the European Team Championship some six moths ago as mentioned HERE. :-)

The battlelines ready on a 6x4' table.
The vampire lord leading his ghastly host.
The undead were sent back to their graves by the frenzied witch elves.

Songs of Drums and Shakos

A group of French grenadiers and hussars face off against Russian jaegers and cossacks. The French moved into the yard as the cossacks advanced on both flanks. The jaegers shot two hussars from their saddles early on which made the French more a bit more cautious. The cossacks, however, failed to break the French defencive position behind the fence. With both sides having lost their cavalry the infantry exchanged volleys with no side gaining a clear advantage. The game ended in a draw as both sides withdrew.

The French hussars challenge the distant cossacks down the road.
The two groups advance on the hamlet.
The Russian jaegers get ready as the French hussars can be heard in the distance.
The grenadiers and jaegers exchange fire.
The grenadiers leave their drummer boy
to hold their flank with a somewhat expected result...
Casualties mount for the two patrols, eventually making
both sides withdraw from the field of battle.

Sweden wins the European Team Championship (ETC) in Warhammer!

Team Sweden with one of "our" guys, Robert playing Chaos Dwarves, participated in the team wargaming tournament past weekend, this year being held in Serbia. Singles tournaments are being held aswell but the main events are the team tournaments in Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40k and - of recent years - Flames of War. Despite its name it is really more of a World Cup with national teams not only from Europe but also from among others USA and Australia. Previous years Sweden have been close to the podium but this year we won the gold! Many congratulations to Robert and the Swedish team!

Some more information on the championship can be found here

More Tournament Gaming

Last weekend some of us attended a Warhammer tournament, Quest for Atlantis XI in the city of Uppsala, with some seventy participants.

Our guys did very well, with Robert winning yet another major tournament. Congratulations!

Here are a few pictures from the weekends gaming.

Remember what they say about cornered animals (or beastmen)?
Rickard's Beastmen went on to win this game with 17-3.

2012 draws to a close

Looking back it was a good year.

We started a few new projects (most notably 15th century and Napoleonic skirmish wargaming) that turned out to be great fun.  We also added alot of new terrain pieces to our collection.

During the year our origins in Warhammer gaming made its presence felt. Parallel to our historical wargaming we found ourselves playing warhammer (and some 40k) aswell. Just when you think you're out they pull you back in...

A big thank you to our followers and the ones that took the time to comment.

See you all next year!

We'll leave you with snapshots of some work in progress. Napoleonic Swedish cavalry (some dismounted) for Song of Drums and Shakos.

On a roll!

Things are going our way on the tournament scene at the moment. At the Quest for Atlantis tournament - a great Warhammer tournament in Uppsala, Sweden, with 50 players - our participating members took 1st and 11th place (1st and 4th if you counted battle points alone). The second Warhammer tournament win this autumn. Congratulations!

Last but not least we have to show you this:

Preparing for War

With the autumn tournament season now in motion we are preparing for more. There are some Warhammer Fantasy tournaments coming up - and a few of 40k as well.

Today a Daemon of Chaos army was up for inventory and a general check up to see what's needed for their next outing.

Tournaments, with their very definite deadlines, works wonders for getting stuff done. However, they also tend to "steal" time from other projects that lack that kind of deadline (i e most of our historical projects).

Anyway, here are some snapshots from today.

August Tournament Play

With heavy rain outside we can look back on mixed results of our competative wargaming august season. Sweden - with one of our guys - ended up on 8th place at the European Team Championship of Warhammer Fantasy. Somewhat of a disapointment after high hopes and expectations. Congratulations to Poland who finished as number 1.

Back in Sweden some of us attended the Gates of Westridge Warhammer Fantasy Tournament held in the city of Västerås late august.  Great fun and a very well organized event with some seventy participants. In the single tournament we came in as 52nd (don't ask...), 15th and - wait for it - 1st! Congratulations to Robert for a well deserved win! As a a team we finished in 2nd place. All in all a great weekend.

Northern Wargaming goes competative

In preparation for this summers ETC (European Team Championship) in Poland in august some of us have been playing a lot of Warhammer Fantasy Battle lately. One of us is going, representing Sweden (as he has done for the last four years) so some sparring is needed. The Swedish team finished 5th last year and this year we are hoping for more.

Last night was no exception. This time featuring Empire vs. Ogres, trying some stuff out.

Maybe not the best of pictures but you get the idea.

Theoderic Gausser's Nordland knights is about to take on the Moot Militia.
